@saps One more thing to note: If a string ends up in a different position at the bottom end of the pattern than where it started at the top, for example if the left-side A string ends up on the right-hand side at the bottom, then you might have to adjust your calculations depending on how many repetitions of the pattern you think you might make. Like in this pattern, if string B(Left) switched places at the bottom to become B(Right), and you think you'll do two repetitions of the pattern to make your bracelet the length you want it to be, then take the average # of knots of string B(Left) and B(Right), which in this case would be (32+6)/2 = 19. That's roughly (almost) 50% of the total # of rows, so you would need about 3 feet for each of these strings, not including loops or ties.

@saps String length: This is a weird one. Different strings in this pattern need very different lengths because certain strings are responsible for a lot more knots in the pattern than others. On the pattern diagram you can tap or click on the top of any string to highlight its path. Then count how many knots use that string throughout the pattern. This is how you can get a sense of which strings will need to be longer than others. The more knots there are for that string, the longer it needs to be. I counted for you, and the number of knots per string are as follows. I list each string letter/color on the left half as (L) and each on the right as (R). Not all patterns have string sequences arranged symmetrically, but this one does. A(L) 26 B(L) 32 C(L) 22 D(L) 32 E(L) 0 F(L) 30 F(R) 2 E(R) 28 D(R) 4 C(R) 24 B(R) 6 A(R) 14 Strings are listed in order as they're arranged on the pattern from left to right. For the actual pattern part of your bracelet (not including loops or ties at beginning or end), to make an average length bracelet of about 7 inches, I would recommend allowing at least 3.5 feet (42 inches) length for the strings with numbers of knots that equal 50% to 75% of the number of rows in the pattern. You can calculate the percentages by dividing the number of knots by the total number of rows. So the first string, A(Left), would be 26/40 = 0.65 Then move the decimal point 2 places to the right (or multiply by 100) to get the percentage. So string A(Left) is 65%. String B(Left) = 0.8 (= 80%) String C(Left) = 0.55 (=55%) ...And so on.... Note: just because string E(Left) has zero knots doesn't mean it needs zero string! LOL 😂 But it can be about 1.5 feet long... NOT including additional length needed for loops & ties at the ends! Depending on what type of loops and/or ties you use, you may need to add another foot or more per string to account for those. Hopefully this will serve as a rough guideline for your string lengths. Just use the info as described above plus some common sense & logical thinking to estimate how long to cut each one. Like for string A(Right) which has 14 knots, a safe bet when in doubt is to cut about 3 feet (36"). For the ones with numbers of knots in the single digits you can probably get away with just 2 feet in length. If you have plenty of string available, always best to overestimate the necessary length than to have your strings be too short. Sorry for the REALLY LONG message!!! Hahaha 😂 Best of luck!! 😍❤️ |
