@hati i would recommend checking out masha knots's youtube channel – she has a great video for beginner bracelet-makers that answers that question and many others. though personally, i hold the end of the string in one hand, stretch that arm all the way out to the side, and cut the string at my opposite shoulder (so it's the length of one arm + across my shoulders, if that makes sense). hopefully that's helpful to you!
