@OOB this is an alpha pattern. It has 16 base strings which always remain vertical, never make knots with them- only ONTO them. Additional colors are added separately, making only forward knots straight across then backward knots straight across on the following row, according to how the pattern shows. You can watch a video tutorial called How to Make Alphas located toward the top of the page between the pattern preview and the knot structure diagram.
