@aha111cia hi! i haven't yet made this pattern myself, but i'd guess at least 6 inches for the base strings, just to make sure you have enough room to hold them. for the leading strings though, length doesn't matter as much since it's pretty easy to add in a new string on an alpha! hope this helps :^)
