i would highly recommend using the flat alpha techniques on this one, especially because the sides get a little tricky, but I tried to make it easier by extending each color so there's less switching on the sides themselves. I have done it and, even though it doesn't look like it in the pattern, the hand does stand out from the colors a good bit as long as you use bright values for the background your brain kinda tunes it out as all one thing so the design stands out.
