@chantelg I don’t keep my thread on the bobbin but I cut a big length burn it too much for small colors that I would be wasting thread but if I run out I just change it somewhere in the middle of a row so that when I cut the string on the side if doesn’t fray out and it’s visible on the sides

@chantelg i recommend just keeping it attached to the bobbin so you don't have to worry about cutting too much or too little!
