@SNH91 what I do is I figure out how I want to read the grid, figure out how big I want it to be, what stitch I want to use( for the blanket I used a half double crochet but if I want a tapestry I use a single stitch). How I read the grid is I use each square as a stitch. I do my foundation chains for the about of squares across, then for the color change I just looked up color changing on YouTube. You can each drop the yarn and then bring across the back, or carry it along. Depending on how many pieces of yarn you have. I carry the yarn that is the background color through out the color change. Hopefully this helps!!!
