how long does the string have to be? i have a hard time figuring out the length and most of the time it ends up short

mine seems to have bigger holes than most of the photos 🙁 I'm pulling the strings as tight as possible but I feel like when I go to do the next line they become loose again. Any tips/suggestions? thank you in advance!!
