@Traveler, thanks, I do see what's going on now. I think it would be better if the picture at the top depicting one's design was presented such that the left and right edges showed the continuity of the design, instead it showing one whole cycle and then a bit more. It's confusing. I guess it does allow you to visualize different start and end points better. Re: length, I will check some of my finished pieces, thanks.

I think this would be the hardest of these designs to make well. It will be difficult to get those really long straight lines straight, and if you make them white, the strong contrast will make any lack of straightness more readily apparent.

Hi @vikas_daga, I really like your design! The pattern preview image that displays at the top usually only shows between 120 and 162 knots rows across the screen (it varies depending on your internet browser and device). Since your pattern has 116 rows, the pattern display shows the end of the first repetition toward the end. On my browser, it shows the first 46 knots repeated again on the right side. So while it may appear that the design doesn't show the repeating pattern correctly, it actually does 🙂 alternating between the large diamond motif and the 4 smaller diamond motifs, again and again 🙂 It may appear that it isn't only because the pattern begins in the center of the 4 smaller diamond motifs. Does that make sense? 🙂 Hopefully I explained that easily 🙈 😆 |

@vikas_daga It tiles correctly. I think it's just how the colors are used in the purple squares makes it look smaller than a whole square. The dark purple has two lines on one side and one on the other. If you start with the diamond in the middle, 3 diamonds would be ~156 rows, if you start with the big diamond made out of the smaller diamonds, it's ~188 rows.I knot with DMC and I find that with my knotting tension, normal patterns are 1 row=1mm and 1 string=1mm approximately. The easiest way to find out for your own knotting tension is to measure a pattern you have already made in the thread that you want to use. Take the width and divide it by how many strings. Take the length and divide it by how many rows. Definitely easier to do it in mm and then convert. It's not perfect and different patterns can lead to different results, but it does give an expected size before you start and you can adjust your string length accordingly. And since you like working with 64 strings and have limited color choices, try making a pattern with 8 or 10 colors. |

This has convinced me that 64 strings is the sweet spot for coming up with really intricate and detailed designs. It offers so much more possibilities. This is still a really difficult form of art creation for me. It's such a challenging and interesting dynamic that you can't just do anything you want. You have to really fight against the constraints and think in a different way to come up with something nice. And then the top and bottom matching! I am not close to fully understanding how to manage that without it having a big effect on the design.

I had a really hard time coming up with a good color scheme. I spent about half the time in making it just trying colors. This is quite good IMO and was almost accidental. Part of it is the challenge of 15 colors I guess. I welcome variations. I would like to make this. It seems like it would translate well as a real piece. It looks like 3 of the diamonds would be about 160 rows. Does anyone know the translation for rows to length? I think 150 rows would be about 12 inches? I'm a bit worried about matching the colors with so many colors. Some of the color interplay is very nuanced and it changes the design when the brightness of some colors changes. In India I can only get 25 colors of Anchor, and DMC is much too expensive here. We have local daga (thread) but the lower quality affects the finished piece when you use some Anchor and some local.Does it seem to anyone else that the image shown for this design doesn't portray the seamless repeating nature of the design correctly? Or is that just me? Is it because it's so wide and it's just an issue with how it therefore displays? It doesn't seem like it tiles correctly. It passed the submission requirements for top and bottom matching. |
