This is an alpha pattern. Alpha patterns work different than normal patterns. To learn how I recommend MashaKnots' video on the flat alpha technique. For this pattern you need 12 base strings (colour doesn't matter) and strings in black, red, orange and yellow (or four other colours) for the leading strings. I think it's definitely less than a skein per colour. @isobe
