@leoopard looks like it might be macrame square knots
First row: (4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4) -> you make a square knot with each of the groups of 4 strings
Second row: 2 (4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4) 2 -> you leave out two strings on each side and make square knots with each of the groups of 4 strings
Third row: 4 (4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4) 4
Fourth row: 6 (4)(4)(4)(4)(4)(4) 6
Fifth row: 8 (4)(4)(4)(4)(4) 8

Hi! To make the badge, this is what I did:
1. I made only the circle part of the alpha, so I left out all of the background knots.
2. I folded all the base strings to the backside then glued on a small piece of fabric to cover the back. Then I trimmed the fabric to be the same size as the badge.
3. I did a "satin stitch" all the way around the edges to make them neat and smooth (kinda, I am still working on my embroidery)
