@fhollis if you have made an alpha pattern before, you can check how long 49 rows are in that one. For the base strings you need the length of those 49 rows plus some extra for loops and ties or whatever you want to make. It also depends what you want to do with this. If you want to make a bracelet, the base strings need to reach around your wrist. Again you need some extra for loops and ties. I'd estimate that for the leading strings you'll need less than one skein per colour.
