@Charity123 you count the number of white tops at the top of the pattern. These will be your base strings, which you can make any color. (i recommend the background color). Then you count the inserted strings, which show the color and use those when needed. I also recommend watching masha knot's video on how to read alpha patterns. Hope it helps!
