It shows a lot of strings because instead of working it along the short side and working down, it's suggesting to work across the long side. All you have to do it turn the picture and use 35 strings.

@makayla1 You can still use the pattern in this size with less strings. 35 white strings, 1 black string, 1 red string. It's still a fair amount of strings but it's a lot less than the 90 listed. I'm not actually sure how you could make this pattern with 90 strings.
