@Hugin People mostly use embroidery thread. I prefer using thin cotton yarn; it's a bit easier for me to knot with, and the wall hanging ends up bigger, which I like. The ends can be a tad weird to finish, though, since the thread's drape is so different. You can see an example of a bookmark made with cotton yarn on my page, if you want. It's the black and green one.
