*YOU WILL NEED 6-STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS OR SEWING MACHINE THREAD FOR THIS CHALLENGE*This challenge is a bit insane actually. Today we are putting the micro into micro macramé. In this challenge I want you to split that 6-strand embroidery floss into its individual strands or use machine thread to make your project. I would prefer that you make a bracelet, but this does take a LOT of patience to make. RULES: -Choose any pattern and let me know here. -Make it using the individual strands of your floss or machine thread. -It can be any size project, but I would prefer that you make it a wearable bracelet. -Post a photo of your project with the words "ant challenge" on it somewhere. -Let me know when your photo gets approved. PRIZES: Placements, but no rewards. DEADLINE: 31 January 2024 TIPS: -When you split your thread, grab one strand with one hand, hold the rest of the strands with the other and pull the individual strand straight out. Don't try to literally split the thread, it will tangle and knot and become a huge mess. Pulling it straight out should help avoid this. If the thread gets stuck as you are pulling it out, find the tail end where the rest are and pull that until some of the coils some out. Try pulling your strand again. It should be moving freely now. Like this: ___ ___ __________ ___ ___ ___ Not this: ||||| / ||||| / |||||/ -Bobbin your individual strands as you take them apart. It will avoid tangles, knots, and threads getting lost. It will also help you see the colors of your thread better if you use similar colors. -Take your time and start much sooner than you think you need. You will take at least 3x longer to make this project than you will a normal project because your thread is so small you will need to make about 3x more repeats than usual to make it a wearable size. You will learn patience. I gave you 2 months for a reason. -Use good quality thread. The smoother your thread, the better. If your 6-strand embroidery floss already gets tangled and has a lot of friction when using it normally, it won't be good for this project and cause endless frustration. I will admit, I have no idea if machine thread will work for this or not. I imagine that machine embroidery thread will be smoother than regular machine thread because it is meant to be shiny and smooth versus just holding fabric together. To test, take two strands of your machine thread and try to knot one around the other like you normally would. If it catches a lot, I wouldn't recommend using it. -You still need the same length or more of thread that you normally use. Your thread my be skinnier, but for your project to end up the same length as normal, you still need the same length of thread. If you normally use a wingspan, use a wingspan here too. I haven't actually finished one of my projects using individual strands, so I don't know if you will actually need more. Splitting thread in half into three strands each, I do need the same amount of thread as normal. I imagine the same is true here too. -Don't pull your strings too tight. If you break strings during your normal bracelet making, you will break these tiny threads. You will learn tension control during this project. Maybe test with some scrap thread how hard you can pull your strands before they break. -A normal pattern will probably be easier to do than an alpha. -I recommend a pattern with at least 12 strings. Anything smaller will be fit for a Barbie. -I recommend choosing to use this pattern in multiple challenges. It will give you more motivation to do it. -HAVE FUN!!!! |

I feel like we are on the same wavelength because I was just thinking this would be a really awesome personal challenge because I have tons of machine thread and no ability to sew lol. Im going to search through my colors and I'll let you know what pattern I choose 🙂 Thanks for the fun and creative challenge ideas!

Do you think if I kept the machine thread on those big bobbins they come on that would become annoying? Or will that be helpful.

@sophlove21 If they are normal size spools, I think it could go either way. The super large spools you probably want to cut it off. If it's sewing kit size or on machine bobbins it's probably fine, but I don't think machine bobbins have a notch to hold the thread in so it would just keep coming undone. If you have to use the same color more than once, you have to cut it off anyway. I recommend if you don't have any cardboard embroidery floss bobbins around, plastic won't hold such a thin thread, get a piece of thin cardboard or card stock and cut it about 1in by 0.5in or any size you want, cut slits in it, and wrap your thread around that. Index cards might work too. Idk, I have enough spare bobbins it isn't a problem for me. |

You can also use hand sewing thread, like from a sewing kit, but I buy machine thread to hand sew.

@sophlove21 If you do use bobbins though, you can stack them in the order you need to use them. It makes it easier to know what string you need next. Assuming that you use a relatively stable surface.

Oh wow this is actually quite a good idea! I don't know exactly if I want to do this yet, because my patience is either nonexistent or negative, but would it be okay if I made my bracelet shorter for my cat or smth?

@sophcharrr Yeah. You can make a bracelet for your cat. Just let me know what pattern you are thinking of if you decide to do it.

Yeah once I was thinking about it more I could see how that could become a pain. I actually do have a ton of cardboard saved for projects. Thanks for all your suggestions!I'm fully committed, I'm going to attempt to make your pattern #154674 🙂 |

@sophlove21 Awesome! That should look great in micro. I'm working on #125443 right now which is also 30 strings. It is 0.5in(14mm) wide using DMC floss.

Wow! I love this challenge! Can I make a non-wearable alpha pattern, let's say something that would be a wall-hanging/keychain in normal size? for example #111671

@Eryne @Oeiceil Are you sure you want to do alpha patterns? At a single strand width you are likely to break base strings. You would also have to separate your thread for the entire background color.@Oeiceil #40293 will be less than a 1/4in wide at nine strings. Are you sure you want to go that skinny? @Eryne #111671 I think will be too small. If my guesstimations are right, that will turn out to be about the size of a fingernail. Are you okay with that? |

If you allow me to enter with it I'd really like to give it a try. I'll be using DMC metallic thread, it feels unbreakable 🤓

i sometimes use thinner string from my grandma it’s about half the thickness of embroidery floss. would that work? if you look at some of my alphas, the knots are considerable thinner compared to my embroidery floss alphas. if it’s not thin enough that’s fine, i just may not have the patience for anything thinner
