Normal pattern formula to find the perfect string lenth?

So- Ive made a few normal type patterns and It always bothers me wasting string form having too much, or not having enough.I'm a Skilled algebra student, and Ive been thinking about how I could work on making a formula that would estimate minimum string length. Im not even sure if It could easily be done, but Im thinking I would need to find the average length of string per knot tied. To find this maybe I could take some scraps and tie 10 or 20 knots and mark the string to the point I used, untie it all, measure, and divide the measurement by # of knots. I would also have to find out if the different knot types use different amounts of string. after all this is found out, for each pattern you would have to count the knots tied with each string. SO what I really want to know is, would anyone find this useful if I find a method? I could make a video with explanation. Im sorry for all the math jumble and rambling. 🙂🙂 |

I love math! Your explanation makes sense, to a certain degree. I'd definitely find it useful as I don't like running out of string, but I hate wasting string even more. Let me know if you do end up making a video; I'll definitely watch and use the method you discover.

If I figure it all out well- maybe it could be integrated into the site. I don't know programming unfortunately, but I'm sure someone would be able to write it as a calculator. *shoulder shrug*

I believe you may be on to a great string length formula. Keep up the good work. In theory I believe you can figure the lengths. You would also need to consider the distance traveled across the pattern of each string. Plus the added mass and length of each knot with variations. Also I know that you can find out how much weight of larger ropes can hold and their strengths for breaking. So I would assume that you would also be able to do what you suggest. Again good luck.

Essentially all you would have to do is find out the (length of string used in your knots x number of knots in said colour) + [physical size of the finished knot x (all knots - said colour)] + the length of string for desired ties + (overhand knot x 2(unless other beginning)) + length of string for physical loop = perfect string length.

So proper formula would be:(length of string used in proper knots x number of knots in colour y) + (physical size of finished knot x all knots colour y passes under) + length for desired ties + (overhand knot x 2) + length of string for physical loop + length of string for after final knot = perfect string length. I think. I'm going to try it and see if it works. |

I think to find that length you should tie like 20 knots, mark the string where you stopped and untie them all. Then measure the string used and divide by 20 for an average size. Do this for each knot types. Each person should do this for there self, because the string type you use and how tight your knots are will affect this.

So I think it's right, but I fudged my knot measurements. So I suggest if you try it you do a solid couple rows before you start measuring any knots I was off .3 cm but overall for the pattern that was addition 20 cm or so. And I was already close to finishing it with the wrong measurements. I'm going to try one more time to be sure though 🙂

IT WORKS!!!! I checked and rechecked it and it definitely works. Minimal 'waste' all depending on how close to your measurements you're willing to get in regards to your ties etc. If you're getting really exact in that department I would add maybe two centimeteres to make it easier to tie.So the working Formula is: (length of string used in proper knots x number of knots in colour y) + (physical size of finished knot x all knots colour y passes under) + length for desired ties + (overhand knot x 2) + length of string for physical loop + length of string for after final knot = perfect string length |

Wow I've never thought about using algebra for bracelets, but it's a good idea. I'll be lucky if I get into pre algebra for 7th grade

Haha don't worry ore algebra is SO easy. I took it a few years ago (currently going into algebra 2) and it's seriously NO DIFFERENT from every other year in math. It's just called "pre algebra" cuz it's literally the year b4 algebra
