It looks great in patterns in which a string is used continuously and is highlighted by surrounding elements, such as a border, like in pattern 33217.

If you like alphas, color-changing thread always looks good as a background string. #34865 #31010 #30292 #33309 #26815 are some of the patterns that I would do with color-changing thread, but any pattern that has a certain thread/design that stands out would work well for color-changing.
