has anyone else noticed the rise in fb bf knot patterns?

If you don’t know what I mean, I’m talking about the patterns that are made of entirely forwards backwards or backwards forwards knots with no regular forwards or backwards knots at all. Idk if im only noticing this now, maybe they’ve been popular for a lot longer, but recently i’ve been seeing crazy fb bf patterns on the front page. Now me personally I’m not a huge fan of them because i just think they turn out a bit wonky but tell me your opinions on these patterns.

I agree, i don't think they're super interesting to knot, but 1212 patterns are quite easy to make, it's pretty much just like pixel art with 2 colours, so you don't have the restrictions of normal patterns, hence their popularity. And they can look good when knotted well.

I agree, they're not that fun to do but it's interesting that they're becoming popular. I think what's happening (and I'm guilty of this too) is that people think 'oh, I can make pixel art out of this, and people love normals!' but they don't consider it being knotted. Instead, the pattern is simply uploaded to a) be rated, loved, and commented on, but not tied, b) add another pattern of that category to the site (oh, no car patterns? I'll make one!) or c) to actually be tied, which is fairly rare. I agree with @Arkengheis that when well done they look very nice, but they're very hard to be knotted correctly. Overall, they're usually just uploaded for people to appreciate the pattern, not actually tie. Unfortunately, a lot of patterns are probably just experimental, uploaded to find a community (ex- if I posted a 200 x 200 of a movie just to find out who else liked the movie), or uploaded to be interacted with. I've done this too and there's no problem with making fun pixel art out of curiosity and a desire to find groups of people who like the same thing, but it's akin to social media in my opinion.

Sorry, that's my stupidly cynical take on why there are so many 1212s, I still think there are a lot of very impressive patterns on this site! I'm not trying to judge 1212 patterns, just giving my opinion on why there's such a high unmade ratio of patterns.

@kpn you couldn’t have said it any better. people upload so many patterns without anyone ever knotting them and it feels like scrolling through instagram.

Honestly I find them easier than alphas and more variety than regular normal patterns

1212 patterns are a great way to start designing normal patterns, in my opinion 😄 I began with them, and then slowly inched my way to learn how to make more segment-knot friendly designs. I don't think I'd ever have learned to make normal patterns at all if it wasn't for 1212 patterns ❤

I do think this thread brought up some good points about 1212s, in that they can be more challenging to tie than other normals. I think a good trick to tying them is having a plastic or wooden ruler nearby to neaten up the knots as you go along 📏 and to use a consistent, taut knot tension. 🙂 Even then it can bit of a challenge - and for that reason, I sometimes I put them in official challenges, but I'm rarely ever disappointed when I do! (Just recently, for my bi-weekly, we has 10 photo submissions of a 1212!)

If you're a designer that makes 1212s and you're reading this, I wouldn't worry too much about whether or not they're getting tied as often, because the joy of designing a pattern is more than valuable enough 😍 Besides - about 60% of all patterns on BraceletBook have zero photos, and 1212s make a small percentage of that amount in comparison 😉

I'm definitely one of those people myself that focuses on the look of the design itself moreso than its ease of tying 🤪 1212's definitely helped me bridge over to more segment friendly designs, but in general, I still make designs moreso for my own visual tastes 🙂

I think if pattern designers only focused on designing things they think people will make, we likely wouldn't have nearly as much variety in the database, and that would be a shame, because a huge part of enjoyment on BraceletBook is discovering new patterns 😍

Socializing and discovering patterns are great ways to enjoy BraceletBook; there are even users who've hardly so much as uploaded one photo (including me!) And who enjoy the site in their own ways! Even now, I can still search through the database and find amazing patterns to admire 🤩 Some of my very favorite designs have yet to be tied, and still inspire my heart and my imagination, to this very day!

Whether you're a designer, a tier, a challenge maker or participant, or someone who loves the social aspect of BraceletBook and gazing at all the amazing patterns, (or all of the above) there really is something for everyone to love on BraceletBook 🥰

I honestly, have made quite a few, hoping each time I would start to like them more, but, honestly, no. I strongly dislike them, and I cant quite pinpoint why. But I think that people who like them, and can do them without getting frustrated, are great!

I feel like it’s OK to have a few in the pattern because having just f or b knot pattern is really really boring, but the patterns made entirely out of fb and bf are getting way too out of hand
