Doing a watch band - not sure how to do a pattern that doesn't attach with larkshead knots

Hi!I've done a bit of macrame and a lot of bracelet making in my time but I'm stumped and I don't even know how to google the question. I'm making a watch strap, and I have the finding already and of course there are tons of mini macrame patterns on this but most of them are all the same color with the pattern being the texture. Or they are being done in embroidery floss which is amazing but it takes quite a lot of embroidery floss to make an inch wide band. I was going to use satin rattail chord which is 2 mm in diameter. But the problem with using multiple colors and using a thicker cord is that I don't actually know how to attach a single strand to the attachment pin without having a bulky tail to hide in a knot (which might be the best option but I thought I'd ask). Most often when I see these kinds of things done it's with doubled strands each attached with a larks head knot. That's a bit tricky to do if you have pattern that doesn't start with doubles of color across the top. I found one on this site that I can use by instead of doing the color that appears on the outsides in a larks head I just lay it across the bar and let all the other larksheads get tied around it and the bar. (Pattern 177267 with the white and pink pattern.) The last restriction I should have mentioned is that I can't just make a bracelet and have it stretch across the back of the watch threaded through the pins, because the strap is not for a watch, it for the holder of a heart rate monitor and so the actual monitoring happens on the back. Is there any way to add photos to these that aren't hosted somewhere else and just found by url? I would like to show what the sensor holder looks like, but I don't currently have public storage for my photos. Thanks, Lisa Any ideas or suggestions where to look or who to ask? |

It's not the same, but maybe one of these methods work:https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/67_adding-paracord-buckles-to-friendship-bracelets/ https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/166_guide-adding-a-buckle-to-your-bracelet/ I never worked with satin rattail cord or made a watch band, so I can't really give much advice. Most people on here work with embroidery floss. If you use embroidery floss, you can split it into individual strands. If you have six strand embroidery floss, you can split it in half (three strands in each half). If you then fold the three strand part and attach it with a larks head knot, afterwards you have six strands to work with again. You can't add photos in the forum, but you can post a link to the photos. |

Considering the pattern you want to make, i think it'd work great with the outermost string being parallel to the watch, then all the others can do lark head's knots onto both the watch and the string, and then you can knot as normal. I've done it for keychains and i'm always happy with the result 🙂

and for other patterns, sometimes there's a row that can work better, or you can reorganize the first few knots to make it work

Thank you @halowiki, I also am used to either jute or embroidery floss. But I can't even imagine how much floss I'd need to do this. I'm also doing this because I have chronic pain (which is what the armband is for). I haven't knotted in a while, but more than an inch wide seems like a project done with floss sounds like way too much for me. Your suggestion sounds really cool, and I'll try it at some time. I'm actually loving the satin rats tail so far. It's a knotting cord used in kumihimo these days. Arkengheis - thank you for your suggestion, that is in fact what I'm doing, I ended up with a different pattern but it is one with doubles except the outermost cord, which I did make parallel to the bar on the sensor holder and I larksheaded the others onto it. I am so in love with this website by the way. If I had had this when I was learning to do this in the 90s, wow. Is there a way to tag people in the reply by tagging their names? Is there an FAQ for basic things in the forum like that 🙂 |

Hi @halokiwi and @Arkengheis,My next question is related to the same project soI hope it's ok that I'm putting it in this reply. The pattern is coming along and soon I'm going to need to make the bracelet adjustable. I've considered doing the sliding knot option, but I was wondering if you have any other suggestions. Thanks! As soon as I figure out where to put the pictures I'll add a progress pic. |

When I considered making a watch band, I was thinking of trying to use actual watch hardware, with the buckle. You can attach them with the tutorials halokiwi linked in their first reply, but you'd need to be super confident in your knots. And for the other side I was gonna make small holes like a shaped pattern

@arkengeis @halokiwiThis is what I'm trying to replace. I took the strap off of once of the ones I have so I have to work with the holder as is. I guess I could use a buckle on the other end. https://www.polar.com/us-en/products/accessories/%7B%%20rootUrl%20'polarcomdomain'%20%%7D/products/accessories/armband-for-polar-verity-sense |

I did manage this project and I'm making a second one. Unfortunately I had to make a new account because some how my password got saved wrong in my password storage. And there must be something wrong with forgot password because I've clicked serveral times on it and haven't gotten the link. I know I'm using the correct email address because I tried to make a new account using the email address with it, and it said there is already an acconunt with that email address. I don't know how to contact tech support about this. And sadly this new account has no ranking so I can't make anymore variations or even friend the two of you. Any suggestions? |

@arkengeis I think I've been able to come up with a situation for all but one of the sets of cords in this pattern I'm hoping you and @halokiwi can help me think through it.https://www.braceletbook.com/variations/normal/369705/ Now this is a variant of https://www.braceletbook.com/patterns/normal/11772/ Both of these are interesting because the every other strand does not do any knotting until the last couple. Because of that, it doesn't matter that much what color that second strand is, so the second strand could be a double length of the first color and therefore attached with a larkshead knot. The last two both contribute color to the Lauren so those either need to be tied on separately with c ok instructor knots or they could be combined into one stand with a clever knot and then attached using the final larkshead. This could be done with a simple overhand knot and then the knot could be just glued to the back before cutting the tails off similar to the tutorial you sent me @halowiki I submitted this variant as a way to show you two. I guess what I'm realizing is how easy it is to create a pattern but not to think through whether you need all the cords and what color they need to be. This is all the same to a person making things out of just the strings but when attaching to an attachment point it's important to think because you measure and cut. I don't know if you want to keep any of my other variants that were approved but if this one could be approved instead of the other one which looks the same I believe, then if possible let's delete the first version of the variant I added and keep the second one. |
