what kind of prizes for challenges would be actually interesting to people? in the past I have done “read a book of your choice,” “knot a pattern of your choice,” etc but it is hard to come up with good ideas.

I think knot a pattern of your choice is good! If you design patterns or pfp’s you can make one for the winner too. Maybe if the winner chooses a pattern for you to make then you mail it to them?
