I usually start with a basic shape, like squares, chevron, candystripe, etc. Then just start adding new shapes, adding strings, taking away strings, changing color order. So basically just experimenting with the generator. I never have a specific design in mind when I start a pattern.

For normals i use the interactive bit and just click buttons untilll i get a nice looking, steady flowing, repeating pattern. For alphas i just look and see if theres an existing pattern for something id want to make (for me or family/friends) and if not i make it myself!
