This is not technically a book or movie so it may not be what you are looking for, but there's this horror podcast called The Magnus Archives. Everyone I know that has listened to it says that it's really amazing. But it's really scary too! The premise is that the narrator (I forgot his name lol) is the new archivist for The Magnus Institute, which researches paranormal and supernatural phenomena, and he is creating recording of past archives. I won't spoil what I do know of any specifics, but apparently some pretty big things start happening about halfway through.

I'm not sure what your specific tastes in horror are, but I'm a bit of a horror buff lmao- what sort of horror do you usually enjoy? Are there any horror tropes that you'd like to avoid?

If you want to go for a good dive into horror in general, you can always start with some of the older classics: things like William Castle's 13 Ghosts (and the subsequent remake starring Matthew Lillard) are really solid if you like paranormal horror.

Scream is always a great intro to slashers- and especially if you're a little more squeamish.

John Carpenter's Halloween is a classic for a reason, and also falls into the category of "slasher films with minimal seen gore", though that changes drastically as the series goes on.

If you're more into horror comedy, which is an underrated genre, things like Cabin in the Woods and Ready or Not are hilarious and splatter-y in equal measure.

On the topic of books, most of my recommendations lean a bit more adult; if you're in the right age range, authors like Billy Martin (who wrote under the penname Poppy Z Brite) and Clive Barker (who wrote the novella that was turned into the Hellraiser films) are geared towards adults and deal with some pretty heavy topics but are wonderful reads. Stephen King novels have always been mildly hit or miss with me, but if you're not sure that you'll like his writing style or content, I think things that were turned into commercially successful films are your safest bet: The Shining, IT, Carrie, etc. The fun part about those is, imo, being able to go watch the movie afterwards and see all the things changed/added later, which The Shining is particularly good for. The Angels are the Reapers is a solid zombie novel that follows a protagonist born after the zombie apocalypse and stuck in my mind for years after I read it.

I'm currently about to crack into The Razorblades in my Head by Donnie Goodman (the man who photoshops Leatherface from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre into old photos on twitter) and while I have 0 idea what sort of horror it is or what content it involves, it's a short story collection and judging by his taste in horror seems promising.

but yeah tldr depending on what type of horror you enjoy/want to avoid there's a million good directions to go in!
