So I want to go to this really cool high school and applications go out in January. The thing is that the application is writing 2 essays on a completely random topic. The other thing is that there is about a 31-42% acceptance rate, and I’m really stressed about that. So if anyone has some tips for high school application, that would be great 👍🏻

Maybe try writing about important topics right now? Such as leading issues in government, economy, community, etc.

Try writing about anything you have a lot to say on. Of course in moderation as the essay might be too long ect. Also, lots of editing. Read over drafts and make multiple (this helps to see prior edits and have parts that you can go back on if you decide it fits after deleting it). You could use the voice feature in most writing apps to listen to your essay and use it to help fix errors or ask somebody to read it for you. With another person, you could also ask them to reread and give advice on things to improve. I would also look at changing words to make the essay stronger and avoid repeating words (basic ones like big -> gigantic for example is a good start, also remember to not change all of them.) I personally like to also use multiple grammar apps (things like grammerly) to get more feedback. If you essay needs to be in a certain format make sure to follow it (there are plenty of examples for different formats online that really help!) Online resources have a lot of tips as well so I would look there! Wishing you good luck on your essays : ))

Some tips for self essays/application essays is not to feel like you’re bragging about yourself. I have a hard time with writing my self essays because I hate talking about myself, but the last thing those schools want is to hear about the same generic things that people write about. Instead of just saying that you’re a hard worker, explain what motivates you to work hard in school. Talk about your plans for the future, and your past accomplishments. Another thing is to not only talk about school. They want to know that you are well-balanced and have activities outside of school. As crazy as it sounds, they don’t want to hear too much about school. Just make sure to find a good balance between academic accomplishments and personal achievements. Hope this helps 🙂

I don't know if this is too late but I would say that the topic matters less than the writing quality. I find that schools don't really care what your hobbies are and whatnot and more your writing and reading level, so while you should choose a good topic that has a lot to be said about, also focus on your syntax, punctuation, spelling, etc.Hope this helps! |
