Okay so since you read the title idk how to explain the difference between alphas and normals but I have photos and a simplified description that is weird.

I would use photos of iconic patterns like candystripe and chevron for normals and for alphas maybe a simple word pattern (I don't think there is an alpha as iconic as candystripe or chevron are for normals).I think alphas are probably easier to explain than normals. You explain the two string types in an alpha, that you knot in rows and that you make knots of different colours by switching between different leading strings. Then you can explain that normals have a different structure than alphas and that there is only one string type in it. |
