Hii! I’m trying to learn to crochet so I can make an Afghan for my family, but everything I make clumps together and doesn’t really grow with each row… PLEASE HELP🥺

So when you say everything clumps together what do you mean? When you crochet you need to begin with a basic starting chain of single stitches that the rest of the afghan will build off of. If you’re completely new to crocheting I would recommend looking at tutorials on YouTube, there are so many wonderful videos that will be great for you to kinda watch an example. I was self taught and the one thing I will say that I wish I was told when I first started is that the first projects I would make will look wonky. Just like tying bracelets you have to find your tension in the way you hold your yarn and the way you hold your hook. It can seem overwhelming but just keep trying, it’ll get easier as you continue to work at it.

@MrsOtter2 tysm!! what I meant was that it gets curvy at one point so the yarn goes the way its curving and it builds from there

Curvy how? Have you learned how to do the final stitch on the end of each row? I learned there’s a good way to keep your edges from being all wavy- it’s like doing the straight edge technique on a bracelet. The way you’d make the edges straight is do a normal stitch then add one chain and continue doing your normal stitches across the row.

i reccomend following a pattern for your first few projects, if you're a visual learner, a video is super helpful. if this is your first project, i wouldn't recommend doing a blanket at first because its so big and there's so much that can go wrong. what i would recommend is making potholders or just squares so you can focus on getting your edges straight.

@MrsOtter2 it bends as a wavy piece of hair would, I unfortunately do not have very efficient ways of learning @stormi unfortunately i'm a hands on learner and have nobody to show me what i'm doing wrong, my family is very modern and quick to abandon old traditions. Thank you for the suggestion!

i think the problem with your work curling up might be because you’re using the wrong hook size with the wrong yarn or you crochet a bit too tight. id recommend checking out youtube and looking for a tutorial on beginner crocheting that has all the tips and tricks to crochet better.
