When I was younger, we had an english textbook which would include a chapter of an old classic for each chapter in the textbook. There was one that I found particularly intriguing, and I've been trying to find this book ever since. I don't remember much, but here's all that i have :

There was a man who was travelling or something, and he stopped at an inn for the night. The room he was given had a four-poster bed, and opposite the bed hung a portrait of a man with a feather in his hat (I assume he had a hat and not a feather just randomly sticking out of his head).
After getting into bed he stared at the portrait for a while, then closed his eyes to sleep.
But he couldn't. After trying for a while, he opened his eyes. He noticed that the ceiling of the bed was closer to his face than he thought it had been.
Then he turned his eyes to the portrait. He saw here that there was something different about it, and continued to stare. After a bit he observed that he was starting to see less and less of the portrait. He kept watching it. As it slowly disappeared, he finally found what was different: the feather was missing!
He kept staring and then, just as the painting fully disappeared, he rolled off the bed, and the wooden ceiling crashed down on where he had been lying.
After that he escaped through the window, I think.

Mind you, this is only how I remember it, and I might have got some things wrong.
But if this seems similar to a book you have read, please reply.

The story sounds really interesting! I tried to search for it but no luck so far 🙁 if you could somehow get ahold of the textbook/find the name online that could help. Goodreads also has a forum called "what's the name of that book?" You might find someone who knows if you give all the details! Good luck🤞🏼
