As the response above said, highly recommend Harry Potter!
For historical fiction, check out rugs seputys. All her books are great, especially between shades of grey (also rebranded as ashes in the snow)
Ready player one, the silent patient, the vegetarian are also very good. Although, I don’t think I’ll recommend the last one to under 16 since it goes quite deep into mental illness, some scenes to me are rather graphic.

@Bracefacer Malice (book 1) Havoc (book 2 both by Chris Wooding) these books are very dark and creepy. For best experience (In my opinion) to read knowing nothing about it.

@Bracefacer I forgot to put on that it bits of comic book throughout so if you need it for school reasons it might not be allowed. (also lots of graphic death in said comic book parts).

Around 12 was a little bit after I first started reading old classic-y kind of books, so I would recommend anything Robert Louis Stevenson. He has all these great pirate books like Treasure Island and Kidnapped. And he has some creepier stuff like Jekyll and Hyde. I’d also recommend Frankenstein, I literally love the book, it’s pretty short, (it was written by a teenage girl in 1817, Mary Shelley—what an icon?) and it’s got the old-timey feel that adds to the fear of it

In terms of some more modern books, I have always been a Percy Jackson fan, so 100% recommend. I also love the Narnia books. They may feel a little young, but they’re really good despite that. Also, the Inkblot series isn’t bad, Land of Stories is good too. Oh, Sue Monk Kidd writes great historical fiction. I love specifically the Invention of Wings and the Secret Life of Bees

I'm 12, and I would recommend reading A Tale Of Magic (I haven't read the sequel yet, so I don't know if i can truly recommend it), and The Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer. I would also recommend A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.

An ember in the ashes, Before she ignites, and Legend are really good series but I think they’re technically ya so there might be some parts that are a little too spicy also as so previous peeps have said land of stories and series of unfortunate events are both great also idk if you like more “classic” fantasy but Chronicles of Narnia is my absolute favorite series
