I've seen a lot of people come in the forums about how stressed they are with school because of their mental illnesses, and Not a lot of people are aware of this, but if your mental health really impacts you you can actually get support from your school in america, and this is called a 504 plan!A 504 plan is basically a form/plan of action to take with people who are disabled/have disabilities, or for people who are majorly affected by their mental illnesses can qualify for this sort of program. The idea is that in the plan your issues are stated, like the way they affect you n such, and then a solution that your school can come up with to help you out with this a 504 plan isn't like an IEP, an IEP is for learning disabilities so they're in a different class/get special help because of it, but a 504 plan is accomodations. For example, my CSS requested this, but anyone can as long as the school goes over the reasons why. You usually have to have a diagnosis to support this, so they can record it and put it on file. On my 504 plan, it states who my parents are, who requested the form, who at the school is handling my case (guidance counselor). Below that, it lists my diagnosis's and who diagnosed me. After that, It's a little chart that states what accommodations i need. the first column states in simplified words what I have, the second one goes into a bit more detail, and the third one goes into the dates this was given/issued it looks something like this: 1.) allowed stress toy | Zeke is allowed a fidget toy in class to handle stress, as long as it does not disrupt the class | issued XXX 2.) Extended time | Zeke is allowed extended time on large assignments and tests | XXXX 3.) Allotted breaks | Zeke is allowed to take breaks in guidance office when needed | XXX 4.) Alternative assignment | Zeke is allowed an alternative assignment when involved with group activities | XXXX 5.) (i forget what this one is called) | Zeke is allowed to go to nurses office for anxiety medication when needed | XXX 6.) Alternative assignment | Zeke is to be given an alternative assignment when it comes to movies | XXX My list is pretty long compared to a lot of other people, but either way it really helps me out when it comes to school If you have anxiety where you have severe panic attacks and you need to leave, or have ADHD and need to walk around the classroom or stand up and stretch, the 504 allows you to do these things to make sure you get the best education you need so that school is a safe environment Schools don't commonly talk about this stuff, i didn't know this was a thing until I was in intensive care with my CSS, she said I really needed one and helped me through the process of going to the school. Without her i probably wouldn't be in school anymore. This was just so you guys are aware of this, not many people are and from what i've seen on here a lot of you might benefit from having one!!! It never hurts to ask and see whats available to you. It's your needs vs the schools wants. |

i’ve had a 504 since 1st grade and it’s very helpful in high school and college classes, but it’s also a lot to keep updated and self advocate.
