The best thread company in my experience is DMC. They are based out of France but you should still be able to get it online. The cheapest site I found for buying specific colors is 123stitch, however, if you are looking for a collection, eBay almost always has good stuff. However, DMC is premiere and relatively expensive. If you are just starting out, I recommend looking for "embroidery floss lot" on eBay or going to Michaels site and buying one of their craft thread packs from Loops and Threads. Don't get Prism! DMC is definitely best but also a little more expensive. I buy the Michaels packages.

I'd say DMC. Craft stores may also have cheaper packages of like 100 skeins but i find those break very easily and aren't worth it. DMC is more durable and looks better.

I use DMC, although I understand it's hard to find in some places. I usually buy it at Walmart. They don't have a ton of colors, but it's usually enough. If I need a more unusual color I go to a craft store. It's a bit more expensive though, so I don't do this every day.
