I am very curious about the history of friendship bracelets, I have already done some research on the Internet, but all of the sources I used say different things. Since I love learning about the different cultures in the world, I would be glad if someone could help me out ❤️ but let's start whit what I have already found

My bracelet book (an actual book I have, not this site) gives the credit of the invention to the Native Americans (from North America), without saying which tribe.

Wikipedia talks about a different (sad) story: «Friendship bracelets are ancient, but their resurgence is modern. The modern popularity of friendship bracelets started in the 1980s when they were seen during protests about the disappearances of Mayan Indians and peasants in Guatemala. The friendship bracelets were brought into the United States by religious groups for use in political rallies». Therefore Wikipedia gives the credit of their resurgence to the Native People of Central America, but doesn't say anything about the past.

Other sites talk more generally about Central-South America, without saying anything more specific

However, the Macramé knotting technique is way older and it originates from the Assyrians. Later, the Arabs were the ones who used this technique most

The Chevron shape is also ancient: it originates from Crete, and the inverse Chevron it was also used in Sparta, because it looks like a Lamba (Λ), the capital letter of Λακεδαιμονία (Lakedaimonía = Sparta)
