I’m going into my freshmen year and I am going to join jazz band and I am unsure what instruments are included and what I would be interested in playing. If anyone is in a jazz band and have any advice that would be perfect🙂

I don't think they have these in jazz band but I played the clarinet in concert band when I was in school! It was so much fun, I would highly recommend it if it's an option for you.

@Hazel23 I am interested in saxophone although I am kinda nervous about reeds because I have a friend who plays saxophone and he complains about his reed a lot

Ok so I play clarinet and sax so I have lots of experience with reeds and they aren’t bad if you take care of them. They really are just a part of the instrument so you should take care of it like you would with other parts. Idk if your school is like mine but we have looooots of saxs and it is super important that a band has lots of lower sounds so trombone or like tenor or Bari sax would be good but if you want to do alto that is COMPLETELY fine too. And don’t worry about the reeds I personally kinda like them 😉 anyways sax would be a good choice (any type) unless you wanna be brass then I would say trombone but you do what your gut is telling you. Jazz is SUPER fun you should like it a lot 😜

Hello! I’ve been in band classes for 6 years and 3 of those have been in jazz. I also take private lessons for jazz. Now personally my main instrument is trumpet and that’s what I play in the jazz band, but I don’t want to force you down any particular path. Jazz band, especially in a big band setting is much much different from a typical classical ensemble. Every single part has an important role in the band’s sound. A typical jazz band has 4-5 trumpets, 4-5 trombones (tenor, tenor, tenor, bass or tenor, tenor, tenor, tenor, bass), 5 saxophones (alto, alto, tenor, tenor, baritone), and the rhythm section which includes piano, drum kit, auxiliary percussion, guitar, and bass. Do you have any experience on any of these instruments?

@samanthaw don’t worry about reeds. You just gotta take care of them. They can be a pain. I play oboe which means I have a double reed, that those are super hard not to break but it will be fine

i was in the jazz band for my school and here's the thing: IT DOESNT MATTER -yes there are instruments that are more for jazz, but really any instrument can do it. for example, I played flute (and yes I was the only one) but it was really fun! It is cool because the flute sounds a bit different so it sounds cool. i would ask your band teacher what they recommend. BUT, an instrument that would be really fun to play is the TROMBONE and you can do these cool slurs with them! if I didn't play flute that is what id play

sax is cool but SO MANY people play it. There are SO many different types of saxes you should look them all up here are a few: Bari Sax (these r big) tenor sax, (those r long) and one more is the soprano (highest) then obvi the alto

I have played trumpet since third grade which is 6 and a half years for me. Trumpet is really easy for me, but just know that some instruments might just not be for you. Maybe you can't play that high. Trumpet might not be for you. Maybe you can't play that low. Tuba may not be for you. I recommend you test out a few instruments and have your conductor tell you the top 5 you'd be best at. Band is a commitment. If you want to be good at the instrument you end up choosing, you'll need to practice a lot. If you don't think the one you chose is right for you, try something else. You'll find your best fit. 😊

When I was joining jazz band, I wanted to play the alto sax, but there were too many already on alto, so I joined with the tenor sax! Honestly its not that hard to play, its basically a bigger version of the recorder (the notes are the same fingerings but there's an octave key too for more range) and it comes with a neckstrap (I'd recommend a padded one!)

ah i am a concert band/symphonic and marching band type of highschooler lol im going to be a sophomore and play euphonium in concert band baritone in marching band and I'm learning trombone as for the reed problem reeds will break chip etc and it is annoying but its just something you'll have to deal with it i picked instruments with a mouthpiece because I wouldn't have to continuously spend money on reeds
(also if you jazz band has trombones i highly recommend if you don't want to do the reed thing lol )

I recommend playing the saxophone. When I was little I learned how to play the oboe and then I learned how to play and saxophone and I really enjoy playing both.
