Hi! I'm getting a puppy as of July, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips for a first-time dog owner 🙂. Feel free to comment here if you have a dog or a pet, or even pet-related patterns. I'm calling on my dog lovers out there 😄.

Dog lover over here! 😂

Try to take him/her out at least 5 times per day to get them in the habit of going to the bathroom outside of their house.

Reward them for being good. Even "sit" and stay deserve treats if you're trying to teach them tricks!

Spend a lot of time with them. Let them know they're loved!

Talk to them sternly if they chew something up, but DO NOT hit them. They will most likely remember that for the rest of their life.

Lastly, enjoy your time with them! The road with a dog won't always be easy, but it's definitely worth it.

@StyleKnots Thank you! I will keep all of your tips in mind. We plan on taking him to puppy training, so hopefully that will give us a good sense of what we need to do as well. 👍

I love puppies!! Im also getting one in the summer (it will be my first dog too), and these tips are really helpful. The dog on my profile pic was one that we found on vacation, and since it was all alone we cared for it, but we weren't allowed to take it with us back home😭. That litteraly killed me.

@AwesomeGrl Aww, that's so sad! It's good your getting a dog this summer though. Do you know when, or what breed?

Take the puppy outside a lot. They have spent up energy and may take it out on some unsuspecting carpets or couches. Also, teething! Give them chew toys or just something hard to gnaw on.

@amazingme Thanks for the tips! Teething was something I haven't actually put a lot of thought into, but it totally makes sense. Ok, chew toys - check!

Np! Also buy lint rollers. I had a friend who was allergic to dog hair and lint rollers were a godsend!

@amazingme Lol, I know my Dad had a golden retriever growing up and she would shed like crazy (at least from what I hear about her). We plan on getting a black Goldendoodle, and they are hypoallergenic (so they're not supposed to shed) which I'm happy about.

My best friend (and neighbor) go to the local shelter a lot. You pick up a few tricks there! Unfortunately, my mom is allergic to both dogs and cats, so I can't have any until I move out, but your choice is really good

@amazingme Ya, that's so cool! My friend is constantly volunteering at pet stores, and animal shelters cause her mom is allergic to like basically anything with fur. This way she can be around animals, and her mom is cool with it. It's too bad your mom is allergic. I was thinking about volunteering myself 🙂

@sushi_06 one thing you should know is that goldendoodles have different types of fur. If it has a tight curl in its fur, you might wanna up your brushing game! Getting mud out of fur like that is a pain! It'll need brushing everyday. But if it has a straight coat, just brush it once or twice a week.

@sushi_06 you should definitely try it! It's fun and honestly, they get so excited seeing people that it's more than worth it! 😂

@amazingme Yes, I've looked into the different types of coats. We've picked out our puppy, we just have to wait until he's weaned from his mother. The breeder thinks he'll have a wavy or straight coat, (so it won't be too curly) but because he was just born a few days ago, it's pretty hard to tell. Thanks for all the help btw 🙂

We don't what breed but we are moving in the summer, so we have to settle in first. Also my mom is kinda scared of dogs so she wants to get a smaller one, even tho I want a big one. But any dog is better then no dog

Big dogs are amazing. The bigger the dog, the sweeter they are!

make sure to have some canned pumpkin and hydrogen peroxide on hand. The pumpkin can treat upset stomachs and diarrhea and if your puppy eats anything non food that could be potentially harmful hydrogen peroxide will make him/her throw it up (use if you cant get to the vet)

@amazingme Yes, I've heard that big dogs are generally calmer, and Harley is supposed to be pretty big. 🙂

@srice Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Especially if anytjing happens and we can't get into the vet. (which seems more likely with CoVid)
