Im a sophomore in high school and every single day since the beginning of the school year i have been wearing my hair up in a bandana. Every. Single. Day. This isn’t a problem at all. I love my bandanas and I think they add spice to my otherwise lame outfits. However the problem is that the school only decided this is a problem like last week. I was at school breakfast on Monday last week and the disciplinary officer guy whatever says ma’am and stops me in my tracks and he says I can’t wear that. I say ok and walk away and i continue wearing my bandanas like I have been LITERALLY EVERYDAY. So then on Friday he comes up to my lunch table to tell me to take it off. I ask the man why and he says because. BECAUSE?! THINK OF A REASON I BET YOUR BALD SELF CANT. So naturally i keep that john on my head. And so today im walking out of breakfast and his big self stops me again. now this time he has a tone and is like you need to take that off you cant be wearing it. this time im real mad and i honestly dont know why but i am. I say no and he says you have to and im like hah good luck finding the random girl you saw in this mama jama crowd of people. That was a horrible idea because third period rolls around and i get called into the principles office. This baldis basic looking self and an entire guidance counsler sit me down and tell me it could be gang wear and if I’m allowed to wear it everyone else will want to too. wanna know what bandana I’m wearing today? PAC MAN. ITS A PAC MAN BANDANA. WHAT AM I GONNA DO? GET MY GANG AND WAKA WAKA EVERYONE? i proceed to say my hair is greasy and i dont want to take it off and this BIG BALD HOG tells me he wants to understand but doesnt. HES BALD. so they make me go to the bathroom and take my “gang wear” off my lustrous dome. keep in mind i look like a whole oil refinery. i get back there and apparently im not allowed to just walk in so the office lady yells at me AHH IM SO RAGE PILLED THATS SO EMBARRASSING AHHHH. anyways theyre like youre fine we are revoking your right up RIGHT UP? YOU WROTE ME UP? okok so i make the treacherous treak back to third period and anyways im really mad and im like seething and its the end of 4th period and RAHH I WANNA WEAR BANDANAS BUT CLEARLY I CANT ANYMORE? WHAT THE FART DONI DO?! sorry if this makes 0 sense im like really mad

I'm sorry this is happening to you :/I think it is really unfair that you are not allowed to wear your bandanas, especially ones that are cute and clearly no gang symbols. I think they should have told you from the start why it is not allowed. Even though it is unfair that you are not allowed to wear your bandana, I kind of understand the reasoning. I don't know how big of an issue gangs are in your area, but I understand that teachers want to keep gangs out of schools. Forbidding gang symbols in schools won't completely solve the issue, but it is at least an attempt at keeping the students a little safer. If they allowed you to wear the bandana, gang members might also argue that the bandanas they are wearing are not gang symbols and then it would be difficult to forbid them from wearing them either. Maybe you can find something that covers your hair that isn't a bandana and that is allowed. Or you could try talking to them again and try to come to an agreement. You were overwhelmed and defensive when this happened, which is not a good starting point for talking to them, but when you cleared your mind a bit, you can think about what you want to say and which suggestions you could make that they could agree too. |

@halokiwi so i fear that gangs aren’t an issue in my school at all and the administration is completely impossible to reason with. Another problem i have is that they specifically yoinked me from class to sit me down and talk to me about it when 4 other kids wore bandanas today the same way I have and nothing was said to them. I think my school has much much bigger issues to deal with than this too and there are genuinely bad people who have been reported with administration ignoring it. I know I’m going way to deep here but its just like theres other things to be worrying about and my friend still gets to walk around without a write up.
