eyo! so I actually started high school this year as well, but two weeks ago--so hopefully I can reassure you a bit about some of your worries 🙂I don't know how big your high school is, but mine is HUGE. So one big thing is just to focus on where you're going, and if you get lost don't be afraid to go up to someone who looks approachable and ask them where to go. I know for the first week or so there were teachers standing out in the hallways giving people direction who needed it. Before you go to school, be sure to double, triple, quadruple check your backpack if you know there's anything you need for the first day. Be sure to have the essentials like some pencils and pens, a notebook, a folder or binder to put papers in, and also if you have one that you use from school your computer! it was so reassuring for me on the first day to just know that for the first day I would have anything that I needed (because we weren't given like a list of anything we'd need or whatever). As for having only one class with that one friend, be sure to talk to them as much as you can about how school has been, share experiences, value that time. For your other classes, take it easy. For us teachers did all sorts of introductory activities and you may find someone there that you like (i actually ended up finding out that someone had the exact same music taste as I did and now we're friends!), but if you don't don't stress about it (not gonna lie she's the only friend I've made this year (so far)). Be sure to just take time for yourself when you're at home because I've been stressed out lately balancing high school, practicing for a cubing competition I have coming up, pole vault, and knotting late birthday gifts for friends. After school just recharge because high school is so stressful and there are SO many people. In my school there's this main stairway that I make sure to avoid because there's just so many people there, and taking more of the back ways really helped me. For studying, I am blessed to have one class that is an hour and a half of study time (mostly... and some college stuff but yeah) so that really helps me to study! If you have something similar then I would suggest doing ANY homework you can do there DURING THAT TIME. It can be so tempting to get unfocused during that study hall but... yeah... take advantage of that. And if you don't have that, sometimes towards the end of classes you might finish early (my Chinese class always has about and extra half hour or so) and so do anything you can there. During freshman year I know for sure that so many people want to join a bunch of clubs, and are involved in a bunch of activities all the time. Do your homework on the bus ride home or in the car ride home. Take it to lunch and work on it there. I like to maximize my time a BUNCH. Back to the organization thing, I'm going to be honest, I have STRUGGLED with organization so far. But hopefully this will help you know what NOT to do- We have student IDs we have to show to get into the building every day. I forgot mine once 😭 it was fine but i almost forgot it another two times. I try to keep it in my backpack instead of my pocket now. Another thing, I don't know if you play an instrument but I've almost forgotten my viola. Twice. Now I just try to run through a mental checklist of what I need for all my classes about half an hour before I go to the bus stop. Yesterday, in fact, I forgot my Algebra II binder. It had my homework in it. It was the one day that my teacher collected the homework - but during my study hall I reprinted the homework in the library and redid it. Saved. But moral of the story, be me. Think about what you need for all your classes. It's hard for me since we alternate days (and you might do the same thing at your school too!) if you do alternate days... I personally have a bullet journal and I write down what each day is and check it in the morning so I don't have to worry about it, but I would recommend getting a planner or something if you don't already have one! It makes it so much easier and seems to put your life in order. Makes you feel in control. Again, with the friends thing, I just know that you'll find somebody in high school that you can be friends with! There are so many more people, which at first is scary, but then you realize that's also so many more people that you can meet and be friends with. A lot of people in your classes are going to be annoying. Pay no mind to them. They will definitely drive you crazy, but just try to find YOUR people. People who you will be friends with for years to come. I hope this helps, and best of luck! 🙂 |

High school is tough! I am going into junior year at a new school so I'm in a similar boat.Socially, definitely try to put yourself out there, especially at the beginning of 9th grade when there are a lot of new people. I know it can be very hard when you are still trying to get the lay of the land in the high school, but strive to make connections, especially in classes where you don't know anyone. You could try to set up a study group with some potential friends in a class that will be a little harder. Also, get involved in some activities. It is an amazing way to make friends. During my freshman year, I was more reserved and didn't do a ton of activities, but I would definitely suggest picking a few things that sound interesting and trying them out. I did the Campus ministry board, a trivia club called masterminds, the school play, school ambassadors, and more. Sports are another great way to make connections. If you are a more sporty person, then do only one-two clubs at first because practices and games will keep you very busy! I don't do any sports which is why I did more clubs. As for study tips... I would definitely say to get ahead in classes as much as possible, and take initiative with teachers to get to know them and their teaching style. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help! Teachers will almost always be happy to help if a student comes to them with a question. Try as hard as you can not to get into the habit of procrastination!!! Even if you don't have a lot of work at first, building good habits is sooo important so that when you have a lot of work, you can stay on track!! Flashcards are such a great study tool! Quizlet is also a good option for online flashcards. Unfortunately, they made most of the free features premium, but flashcards ae still free. I had a giant quizlet for my biology midterm freshman year, and I ended up with an amazing grade! Also, about midterms...don't stress about them too much. Obviously, still study, but don't stress too much if you don't get a great grade, as they are usually only 5% of your grade, and the first intense high school test you'll take. I would say start studying early January casually, (10-15 min a day) and study tons the week before and week of midterms. The midterm can also teach you a lot about what the final will look like. Also, save all of your materials because you may need them for the final. I had an English teacher who had us rewrite our first essay as part of our final, and it was really tough for people who had lost it. If one of your teachers isn't very good (at all) try to take the initiative to learn the material, and pay attention in class. honestly I've found that the more I pay attention in class, the less I have to study. I had a science teacher who I literally ended up in arguments with after every. single. test. because half of his questions we never learned. If you have a problem with a teacher, (like an unfair test question) be as respectful as possible when you bring it up. If one of your teachers is super difficult, don't be afraid to ask questions, and try to raise your hand in class so you can get feedback. Overall, remember that you are not the only new kid!!! you may get lost, (I definitely did) you may fail a quiz, you may feel really stressed out. School counselors are a great resource if you need them! Be confident, be yourself, and have fun, make friends, and make memories!! you got this!! ❤️ ❤️ |
