Sorry about all the band related posts, but I play the clarinet and I have a question about reeds. How do I know if the strength is too hard or if that’s the way it’s supposed to be? When I open a new reed, it takes a looooot of effort for the sound to come out and I can’t play with it. I try to play on that reed for like a minute every few days until the sound comes out easily. Is this normal or do reeds require breaking in first? Please help! All insights are greatly appreciated.

Im a double reed and I use medium strength reeds and cycle through every week. Im not very knowledgeable about normal reeds. You should also throughly soak reeeds tho

for sax and clarinet, our bant teacher makes us use either three or three and a half. personally, i like three better. When I first started i liked 2 and a half. I also reccomend 2.5 for begginers (but ik ur not a begginer)

I don't play a reed instrument, but yes, you have to break it in and yes, if you can't play a sound at all in the beginning, it might be too hard for you. It will get easier with breaking it in more, but I would just try out softer weeds, if it is otherwise too hard.If you want, I can ask my brother about it, because he plays the clarinet. |
