How did you guys learn how to read patterns? I understood the row-by-row method and tried it, but I was really frustrated with it. I was trying to learn how to segment knot and one day it just clicked, and now I only segment knot normals.

Honestly I don't remember. I learned how to knot the candystripe and the chevron years ago without ever seeing a pattern for them.
Then I learned other easy patterns like diamond patterns and braid patterns also without seeing patterns for those.
And when I came into contact with patterns, I was so familiar with the structure of normal patterns and segment knotting as a concept, that it just made sense how to read them. Of course I struggled with more complex normal patterns, but I think that's normal in the beginning.

For normals I found a website about 2 years ago that explained how to make #17932 using the row by row method. I don't really remember, but I don't think I read all of the instructions since it seemed rather self explanatory. After about 3 days or so of trying new patterns, I decided to try to segment knotting (not knowing what it was called at the time, I thought I made it up).
For a few months I searched patterns online, after awhile of doing that and noticing "braceletbook.com" in the middle of the patterns I decided to check out this amazing website and here I am now!
For alphas, I originally watched a youtube video teaching how to make alphas not using the flat alpha technique and strongly dislike the process. A few weeks (months maybe, not really sure) I watched a video explaining the flat alpha technique and found it quite enjoyable!

Initially I couldn’t read a pattern to save my life. Many years ago a friend taught me the Chevron pattern and only that pattern. It finally hit me to print a Chevron and go from there. I understood the knot types but couldn’t figure out what strings to use. Then the switched flipped and I realized the color of the bubble was the string color needed. Game on!!

I didn't even know knotting row-by-row was a thing until the beginning of this year 😂

My sister was really into bracelets before me, and I would look at the pattern and go like “how????” Once I got into it I caught on pretty fast, I did about 5 ish bracelets row by row, then went to segment knotting and never went back

I think I watched the #6390 video and the girl that was teaching also like went through the pattern so she taught me how to go row by row. The video was by @hallepater

Like many people, I learned the chevron and candy stripe from friends. I remember my best friend and I getting gifted a friendship bracelet kit from the store and making the chevron together, but we got all of the strings kept tangling at first, so we kept giving up for a while and going swimming 😂 I think some years later I just looked up pattern #2 and was like, "huh, so that's how these knots are represented, cool!" and then when I saw the arrows for the other two knots I was like "oh, I get it, the first knot is one way and the second knot is the other way, sweet!" It could've happened differently though because I don't fully remember lol.
