ok y’all I need to vent abt this. CAST OF CHARACTERS: me- yep that’s it it’s just me lol (female ) Ross- my idiotic music teacher (male) Caitlyn- my friend/crush/drummer (female) Emerson- my friend kind of / guitar player (non-binary I think but idk Ezra- annoying 10 year old guitar player (male) Zoe- bass player who is way better than the rest of us Noah- 8 yo keyboard player ok so here we go… I go to a rock music school. I’ve had previous bad experiences with teachers there so I’ve switched classes once and singing teachers twice. when I switched classes, we had a teacher who we’ll call Brett. Brett was awesome, he let us learn basically any song we wanted as long as it wasn’t way too hard. He also really cared about teaching us correctly, and was overall just a cool person. Then he quit to get a better job. His friend, Ross, comes to replace us. Ross was fine at first. But then it came time to pick new songs. I suggest some slightly underground but not actually underground 90s bands like Veruca Salt, Sleater-Kinney, etc. He clearly had never heard of any of this so he just says “No.” no explanation, nothing. Then he starts some crap about how we can only play “mega hits” then later HE suggests a very obscure The Who song that none of us know (not even Ezra The Who Superfan). I suggest Running up that hill, and he says “ no one knows Kate bush, that’s not popular at all. Only mega hits.” Mind you, this song is played on mainstream pop radio 40 years after its release. so that’s one problem. the other problem is the favoritism. he clearly hates both me and Caitlyn. i have mainly been suggesting 90s rock, but also 80s synth pop, the Beatles, and modern alt/indie rock. So, when we don’t know a couple of the songs he suggests for us, he makes one of the stupidest generalizations I’ve ever heard, directed towards me and Caitlyn. he said “you guys are just at that phase where you only think one kind of music is good. you’ll grow out of it.” Mind you, my Spotify wrapped said I listened to 49 genres of music this year 😂 Also, he almost NEVER refers to Caitlyn by name. Only, the drummer. And it’s never positive either. Only things like “I don’t think the drummer can handle that” to a fairly simple but fast song that she could definitely handle. He’s always so shocked when I do well on a song, too. I’m not the best singer, but he shouldn’t be so surprised when I work on a song and sound good. He didn’t know that summer of 69 was an 80s song. But lastly, he always favors Ezra over me and Caitlyn, I suggested the song cherry bomb around 5 times because he wasn’t acknowledging me whatsoever. Then Emerson, who knew I wanted the song and they did too, says, hey what about cherry bomb? Ross says, great idea yes! Is everyone ok with that? I suggested the song rebel rebel also around 4 times and then he says hey what about rebel rebel as if it’s his idea 😂. Next, no one but me and Ezra to an extent had any ideas. So I’m spouting off lots of song ideas and he’s saying no to all of them, also to Ezra’s but just because they’re all insanely hard. mine didn’t get an explanation and if they did it was “that’s not a popular song” then he’s like “we barley have any songs chosen, you guys need to give me some ideas or Im just going to pick for you.” I was like, I have ideas. “Yeah but you’ve suggested like all of the songs so let’s give someone else a chance” *looks to the male members of the band* any ideas? no. Caitlyn/Emerson? Any ideas? No. I’m just like ughhhhhhhhh no one else is gonna pick anything in my mind. Lastly, at one point I made some passing comment about how a lot of 60s/70s music blends together. he was like “no it doesn’t!” I said, “it does, especially late 60s and early 70s. It blends together a lot more than say, 80s and 90s music.” “You’re wrong, do your research. In my house growing up there was a very hard line between 1969 and 1970. (Which is so dumb bc it’s not like when the calendar turns music just instantly changes.) you should look up laurel canyon none of that stuff blends together.” I knew exactly what laurel canyon was 😂 he just assumed I didn’t, which I’m guessing is because I’m young and a girl. ugh this guy is such an idiot sometimes. What do I do? |

Well he sounds like the most stupid, annoying, sexist brat ever!I don't really know what you should do but talk it over with the other band members before the teacher is in. Tell me how it goes and good luck I will have a think and what else you could do but if it gets worse you could tell the head of the school and it. |

@Aussie_Izz I actually just had a conversation with Caitlyn about this and she feels the exact same way and was talking about how hung up she was on it.so at least I’ve got someone on my side. I wouldn’t want to talk to the manager tho since I otherwise like the group and his solution last time was “we’ll switch you groups” and I got switched to this class

@Aussie_Izz oh you definitely would. i actually just remembered another thing where I asked if we could pick some songs by female artists that would maybe be more in my vocal range, and he actually said no!! he said that it wasn’t necessary since I have a low voice 🙄. Dude you’re missing the point.

!! ALSO !! i have band every Saturday so I’ll update when I go! I’m kind of dreading tomorrow because of this, but if a lot more happens I feel like I would have enough reason to talk to the manager about it (I’m not a Karen I swear but it’s a problem) plus in March I can get out of this hellhole since it will be time for me to graduate to a higher class (if Ross allows it which I really hope he does since Brett was going to but I felt I wasn’t ready since I had missed a lot) |

What is wrong with him! Does he listen and think about any of your ideas? Because that would be so much easier if it was done by a female singer bc people would be able to see how good you are by singing a song quite similarly! I just hope he gets fired soon.

@Aussie_Izz he clearly thinks about our ideas but hates them. for example he kept trying to get Caitlyn to suggest something and when she does he just says ehhh. We have 7 songs and only one is by a female artist and we had to suggest it so many times before he aknowleged ys

@Aussie_Izz @nonhuman ok. there’s a lot. he gave us this huge lecture about how we don’t need to like our songs, and how he saw a man die in a car crash, and also how we should’ve practiced more OVER CHRISTMAS/NEW YEARS because HE had 3 shows and practiced for 60 hours so therefore it wasn’t unreasonable that we should know every song perfectly

@Aussie_Izz @nonhuman also, when he asked if there were any songs we didn’t really want to do I said yes, summer of 69 (which everyone agreed with) and should I stay or should I go (which I love but it’s not really in my vocal range) he got upset and said it doesn’t matter if we don’t like the song because you should just try to enjoy it. and then he said something that shocked me, you have to enjoy it because it could be your last, then he started crying and told us how he once watched somebody die in a car crash.
