Hi!If you don’t want to listen to me rant about my parents, give me advice, or want to rant about your parents, (or just want to read about other peoples parent drama) then this is probably a waste of time for you. Ok, so I feel like my parents are kind of strict. Obviously they aren’t the most strict and they are nice. My parents are mostly strict about screens. My Dad’s in charge of the screen time limits on our phones. He gives us 30 minutes on weekdays (Monday-Friday) on games, TikTok, safari, and YouTube. We get 1 hour on weekends. (Saturday and Sunday) My Dad said that if I ask him for no time limit again he’ll take 5/10 minutes off the next day or 1 minute forever. It doesn’t even seem like he listens when I tell him why I shouldn’t have a limit. We also hardly ever get to watch tv even when we have played outside, cleaned up, and done our homework. I don’t even ask to watch tv very often because I have practice and games. I only watch one 25 minute episode every time too. The only time we get to watch as much tv as we want is weekend mornings, but we hardly even get to because we have games. I even wrote an essay on why I shouldn’t have a limit. It’s super long, so you can skip over it, but it has all the reasons why I think I shouldn’t have a limit. And keep in mind it’s basically written as me talking to my parents. Here it is: I know, I know, I’ve already asked you well… a few times. Can I please have no screen time limit? ⏳⏱⏰ I bet you’re thinking, “Not this again…” but that’s wrong. This time it WILL be different. I think you may be forgetting exactly how old I am. Not 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10, but 12. That means that I’m not a little kid, but I’m almost a teenager (AKA a tween.) And what do tweens and teens like to do? You guessed it, be on their phones. I’m not like the dumb kids you think of when you hear the word “tween” or “teen.” I’m smarter and have more common sense and knowledge. Let me remind you, I am a straight A student. I’m also very responsible. I know how much screen time is too much. I will make sure to keep it under an hour and a half everyday. (Including texts, calls, etc.) I will always make sure to keep my priorities straight. School comes first, then my other commitments. I feel like it is also necessary to learn self control. If I don’t get to learn how to pull my self away when I’m younger, I may have trouble with it when I’m older. I need to practice knowing when I have had enough. I like to watch YouTube when I’m doing things such as organizing my room, tidying up, or making bracelets. It helps motivate me to do these things because then I can also enjoy myself in the process. I also finish them faster. I also like to follow tutorials to learn how to do new crafts. When I have a limit I don’t want to spend my time on following those tutorials. Instead I just want to watch something that I’ll enjoy and find relaxing. If I didn’t have a limit I would be more likely to watch these tutorials knowing there will still always be time left for entertainment. I might not even feel like watching something else after that because I’ve felt like I already have had enough. Having a limit makes me more aware to not “waste” my time, but it also makes me feel anxious about it. (I talk more about that in the next paragraph.) I know how to not waste my time even without a limit. I make sure I have done everything I need to do before I spend unnecessary time on my phone or that I can work on what I need to do while being on my phone. I know this last reason may sound a bit questionable and make me sound wimpy, but I’ll say it anyways. Having a limit makes me feel anxious. It’s kind of hard to explain, but knowing it’s there makes me feel that way. Also when I’m in the middle of something (for example, making a TikTok) and I run out of time, I get anxious that it’ll delete, something will happen to it, I won’t remember to finish it, or something like that. That’s actually one of the BIG reasons. You can tell me your expectations and I will make sure to follow them. If you have any requests for me using my phone on my own time please list them below. (Things such as if I neglect other more important stuff, you put the limit back on or take my phone away for a certain amount of time.) - [ ] Start list here Thank you for reading this! Please consider it. ❤️ They also never let us choose when we eat sweets or pack sweets in our lunches. (Or any sort of junk food for that matter.) We never have chips or Oreos, stuff like that, in our house. Congrats on surviving this whole message! Thank you so much for reading! It means a lot to me. ❤️ @bsoftball |

i 100% get what your saying, but instead of asking for free reign of electronics maybe ask for an extra half hour every day, like to build control/gradually transfer control from them to you. also i didnt get a phone until my 16th birthday and i got a ipad when i was 14 so take from that what you will.

I have a tip for you that I learned when I had a screen limit.I know that you said you like to watch yt while doign some things. If you use spotify, then you can turn off your phone while you are listening to a podcast/music. Since your phone is off (even though something is still playing), it isn't using any screentime. And podcasts might be a good way to replace youtube. |

So I have screen limits but I also don’t have YouTube or anything like that. I would suggest maybe talking to your parents and asking why you have a screen limit. Then maybe talk it over with them. Or maybe one day when you have watched your allotted amount of time and you want to watch a tutorial on how to do something like make a bracelet end or how to draw something. Go to them and maybe try asking if you can have a little more time to figure out how to do the thing you want to. Question: have you ever been in the middle of a tutorial and your time is up? Have you ever tried asking for a little bit more time to finish that tutorial? Tiny steps sometimes can amount to big steps in the future!

@ArtsyAnna thank you! To answer your questions, yes I have ran out of time in the middle of a tutorial, but they won’t give me more time to finish it.

I get 3.5 hours a day on certain apps. I’m 18 and am not allowed any socials( this was a stretch when I asked). I also was just allowed to get YouTube back on my birthday. So I get what you’re saying. They get mad when I ask for extra cause I was working on a pattern( so barely looking at the screen). The annoying thing is my youngest sister’s always ask for extra at night to watch a show on a device and they usually get more. So I can totally relate |

I’d start printing patterns and tutorials, if you have a printer

@crafter83 hi! Thank you! I do print patterns, but I can’t really print tutorials bc I watch video tutorials. Also, I think there should be a way that you can take off the limits because you are 18 and that is a thing you can legally control as an adult.

i dont even have any device, I have to share the giant computer in the school room with my sister. Luckily it's upstairs so usually my parents don't even realize when I'm using it lol🙂how much time do your parents spend on devices/watching tv? The kids i babysit aren't allowed any screentime at all (which really seems like overdoing it to me) and there is like NO SUGAR WHATSOEVER in their house. It makes keeping them entertained kind of difficult😂 |

my dad and sister constantly thinks whatever im watching on tv is weird/crazy/stupid/terrible/boring/pointless (thus i rarely watch tv) and that whenever any of us are doing anything at all on a screen we should be outside. He grew up without a tv, btw. it's funny cuz whenever we're at our grandparent's (my dad's parents) they always suggest we go watch something. they have a tv but it only works for DVDs. my little sister is always bothered when i turn the tv on, either she goes to yell at my mom about me watching tv or she comes and grabs the remote from me ant turns it off. its really annoying😂

That’s a shame. No, I can’t. Their all synced and I don’t own it( a iPad) so.. Maybe when I buy a phone I could, but likely I won’t be able to until I move out.It doesn’t affect me except on Saturday though since my dad uses it on Sunday for work and I work long hours on weekdays |

@TKEStrong3 I’m sorry! You don’t need to listen to your dad and sister when they think you are watching something bad. As long as you like it, then that’s all that matters. And I agree that the rules in the family you babysit are a bit strict and way too extreme.

@crafter83 sorry! Maybe you can start saving up for a phone and then you’ll have more freedom with it. Also sorry you have to work for so long.

@TKEStrong3 and to answer your question- my parents work on their computers all day. My mom also seems to spend about 5 hours on her phone somehow (she doesn’t have a full time job) and that is seriously the truth if you check her screen time. They also watch an hour of tv every night.

do you have computers at your school or a library that you could use or do you have to pay for those? Do you know why you can't have more screen time?if you get a portable DVD/CD player you could watch movies/listen to music without being on your phone, but i guess that's still a screen. |

It’s okay, it’s the reality of being a adult

@TKEStrong3 yes, I have a school computer, but they block everything we don’t use for schoolwork. I can’t have more screen time because it’s bad for you and it’s apparently hard for kids my age to pull away from screens. I can always listen to music on my phone or Alexa, so that’s not a problem. As for the DVD player, that’s a good idea, but my parents would know about it and tell me to stop watching when it’s been “too long.” It would be the same thing as watching tv. Thank you for all the suggestions!

honestly ik i replied but just wait it out. hopefully when schools out you get more freedom, but having this control now makes high school easier. ive seen some people i know struggle with doing schoolwork cause they cant put their phone down, but youve been doing it so while its tough now, in a few years itll pay off
