I've made patches before!! I'm also working on a punk-ish jacket (same patchwork idea but the band patches are more emo-ish/alternative rock), I've only made 4 patches so far and I'm nowhere close to finishing though. @beatlesall has a great tutorial on how to make shaped patches but I've only made rectangle patches because I'm not skilled enough to make a shaped patch, I used the part where they talk about glueing down the base strings and it works pretty well. I do use mod podge instead of fabric glue because that's the only thing I have and it works okay but definitely get fabric glue, that would probably work better. As for sewing, I dunno I can't even sew a patch on without it being really crooked so um try not to stab yourself with the needle I guess? Rattus Rattus has a sewing tutorial at the end of one of their diy alt clothing videos https://youtu.be/qUSEZK82YTo and I haven't watched many of their videos but I would definitely recommend their channel for clothing ideas and just the good vibes their videos give off. I hope I gave some good-ish tips and that you're jacket turns out well!

Oh and sewing would probably be affected by what material your jacket is, mine is just a jean jacket from JCPenny that my mom got me but if it were a thicker material it would make the needle harder to poke through both the patch and the jacket

I agree with what @audreyt293 said! The tutorial is super easy to follow
and for sewing it might be a bit tough - I got something called fabric fuse which is a double-sided permanent adhesive for fabrics and won't be affected by washing. It comes as a tape or a large square so you can cut to suit your patches (just make sure to clean your scissors after bc it's superrr sticky!) 😊
