my friends birthday is this weekend, and she wants books. she gave me a book she wanted, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to find it, so I want some more recommendations to get her just in case!

she really likes dystopian books (young adult), but would be fine with any genre, i would prefer if the book wasn't too popular because i dont want to get her a book she's already read 😛

A *classic* dystopian YA is The Giver by Lois Lowry, and because it's "old" your friend probably hasn't read it yet. I read it as a kid, a teen, and adult and it's held up really well. It's also a standalone, so you won't have to worry about leaving her on a cliffhanger and needing to purchase the rest of the series.

Yes I definitely agree on The Giver! It's popular enough that she may have read it, but you can basically find it anywhere (especially used) and it's usually not too expensive. Though, while it can serve as a standalone, there actually are three more books that go with it and they're excellent (Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son). @Clrowi if you haven't read them I definitely recommend (: they're some of my favorites

The Wheel of Time series. I'm pretty sure it would count as young adult. I have just started reading the prequel, but I've heard that it's good.

The lone city by Amy Ewing is a trilogy and Legend by Marie Lu has 3 or 4 books I don’t remember exactly, but I really liked those and your friend might like them too. Oh also The Precious Stone trilogy by Kerstin Gier. Super good. Hope this helped!

they both die in the end was A W E S O M E! its a ya dystopia/realistic fiction where you get a notice saying "ur gonna die today" and it was soooo good! there is a lot of swearing, and the end was very sad, but i would DEFINITELY recomend

@llama1013 thank you for that correction! Liked The Giver enough that I will definitely seek those others out.

@czargasm WoT is definitely not YA (my opinion only, genres are made up anyways), but can certainly be read by younger audiences, my first read through of the series started when I was 13.

New Spring is good, it's the prequel to the *epic* WoT series, which is one of the best fantasy series OF ALL TIME.

@Clrowi Ok, my bad. Thank you for correcting me 😉. I probably shouldn't make an assumption like that. 😉

You should get her Ascension by Victor Dixen! It’s like a dating show, but in space (and yes, it’s dystopian)!

@Clrowi thank you for the reccomendation! i love the giver, it's super good! there's actually 3 more books in the 'series' and I've read the giver and the second one (the messenger), and from what I've read they're not as connected as other book series are, you can read any one of them and still make sense of what's going on 😊
