When you want to say one unicorn, do you say “a unicorn” or “an unicorn” cuz your supposed to say an if something has a vowel as the first letter, but it sounds weird as “an unicorn” 🤔

@2006_Mandy @workmanha my sister helped me figure it out lol 😂 you say it like “younicorn” not “unicorn” and when a word starts with a y, you would say a so it’s “a [yo]unicorn” 😜😂

The "proper" way to say it is an unicorn, but I think ,ost people would just say a unicorn. I never thought of that until I saw this post 😂

It would be “a unicorn”. As @Elise64 explained it, it’s a long “U” sound, so it’s pronounced as “you” not “uh”. The word is pronounced “[you]nicorn” so it is preceded by “a”. If it was pronounced “[uh]nicorn”, then it would be preceded by “an”. Think about it this way: “an” mostly follows short vowel sounds. For example, an awesome idea, an unanswered question, etc. “A” mostly follows consonant sounds. For example, a pattern, a bracelet, a watermelon. Hope this helps : )
