I don’t do forum topics often so sorry if this is not set out well. Ok, so when I was reading a book this afternoon, I started balling my eyes out. Here’s some questions for you all. Do you cry while reading? (Yes, on the special occasion) If so: Is there anything in particular that makes you cry? What books have made you cry? And also: What in a book makes you laugh? Do you laugh at thing that most likely weren’t meat to be laughed at? (I hope I’m not the only one...) What are your favourite tropes in books? What tropes do you hate in books? What tropes do you think are over used? You don’t need to answer them all, just curious. |

Yes, I definitely cry while reading. Often I find myself tearing up but there have been a few books where I find myself balling for hours on end. I don’t really think that there’s anything in particular that makes me cry but I find that I tend to cry more about books with characters that I can relate to and see myself in. For example, I don’t tend to cry at fantasy books but usually ya or contemporary books have much more of an emotional impact on me. Some of the books that have made me cry are The Fault In Our Stars, All The Bright Places, Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, Shadow Kiss, A Little Life, Date Me Bryson Keller, This Winter, Nick and Charlie, Solitaire, Radio Silence and Hearstopper. Recently I cried for three hours over A Little Life which in my opinion is the saddest and most dear reading book ever, or at least one of them. Also when I was younger I spent an hour sobbing over the ending of Shadow Kiss which is the third book in the Vampire Academy series, but I don’t think I would cry over it now. It’s weird but actually sarcasm makes me laugh a lot in books, more so than when the author actually purposefully made a scene fun by. I definitely laugh at things that weren’t meant to be laughed at but that usually only happens if I’ve been up all night reading and it’s like three am and I’m delirious, which happens a lot. One of my favorite tropes is the found family trope, which makes me feel all happy and warm. Unless done really well I tend to dislike the enemy’s to lovers trope because it can be very cliche and often is a slow burn kind of romance which tends to bore me. The book Carry On by Rainbow Rowell does the trope really well. I also tend to dislike the golden trio/quest trope which are often paired together, I just think they’re much too over used, especially in fantasy.

Literally the Vampire Academy series did everything it made me laugh, cry, it made me have some of the most awkward moments in life (I end up laughing at the weird points just because of the character)I love fantasy with a nice romantic part, a dash of thriller, definitely some action, and like a sprinkle of tragedy so i found this um category that i don't likeeeee is outpace romance like lovers but one is on the moon and the other is in dairy queen and they struggleee |

@bunny9 Oh my god, finally someone else who cried over Vampire Academy. When I told people that it made me cry they were so confused about how vampire novels could have that much of an effect on me. The ending to Shadow Kiss shattered me.

I cry reading The Children of Húrin, The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings, The Silmarillion, and The Fall of Gondolin when my favorite characters die. And the last line of The Silmarillion, "And an end was come for the Eldar of story and of song" always makes me cry.

I just read hero’s of Olympus and it was so good! At the end I almost cried because I thought one of the characters had died (I’m not going to say who so I don’t spoil it) but it turns out he didn’t and then I almost cried again when I found out he was alive. This was also one of the characters I really loved he made lots of jokes and had a really funny scene(team Leo 😂) and yes, I laugh at sarcasm too. And when I say I almost cried that really means something because I’m not very emotional and never cry. I don’t remember a time when I have ever cried during a book or movie so saying that I was like on the verge of tears is a big deal. So yeah, if you haven’t read it you should totally read it, just read Percy Jackson first or you will be so confused 🙂 |

@bunny9 My poor twelve year old heart was not prepared for Dimitri to turn, I’m pretty sure I would have died for him. Rose asking Adrian for money killed me because I really dislike Adrian and then they started dating later on which really made me angry because obviously Rose and Dimitri were MEANT TO BE TOGETHER, Dimitri getting captured broke me
