When making an alphas do you have to have a extra leading/knotting string?

you always need one leading string when making an alpha plus however many base strings for your pattern then when there is a different colour you do a colour switch\ |

Cut half as many base strings as you need, and make each one twice the length that you need (kind of like when you’re going to do a loop). Then attach each base string using a lark’s head knot. They’re really simple but hard to explain without a visual, so you should google it to find a tutorial. There’s a good chance you already know how to make them. If the pattern has an odd number of base strings, you can should tie on one more base string than you need, and then either add a column to one side of the pattern or use the extra base string as your leading string
