I use dmc. I love it but In my country it’s (literally) 3$ a skein. I’d like to get thread from other brands as well but I do alphas. I really need the string to be the same thickness. If anyone can recommend some string from Amazon (for me Amazon string is only useful if it’s from Amazon.de) or just anywhere that is the same thickness as dmc I’d highly appreciate it. Thanks in advance : )

I've used other brands than DMC, but I've never encountered any that would be exactly the same thickness as DMC.The best alternative I found was "FOR TYCHE SPECIAL" on Temu (https://share.temu.com/K4CbEqaaSzA and https://share.temu.com/zywXM2p12yA). They produce just slightly larger knots; my 8-string chevron with DMC thread measures 8mm in width, but 9mm with this brand. But they're sooo cheap, a pack of 8 skeins costs less than one skein of DMC. You could just replace your existing DMCs for this thread without having to mix them. You might even find them more pleasant to work with, they're pretty soft, fray less. I generally prefer cotton to polyester, so I ended up rejecting those and going back to DMC, plus they felt weird every time they grazed my nails. DMCs are kinda pricey for me too, so what I do before shopping for thread is I choose 3-4 patterns that I definitely know I'm going to make and I only buy the thread that I need for them. I stopped buying thread just by "oh that's a nice color, it might come in handy in some projects". That way I minimized my expenses for bracelet making. Also you might want to try visiting some other local craft stores, different places have their own pricings for DMC. |

upd. I remembered that I have mixed them in an alpha bracelet. You can see on my photo for the pattern #1654 that it looks fine, I used "for tyche special" for the blue and DMC for the white. However, I'm not sure how it would have turned out if I used them vice versa, i.e. DMC for the background and the thicker one for the inside elements. You'd need to experiment a little. |

I don't like dmc because it frays when I use it. I prefer the Lovimag bulk packs on Amazon. Unless you need multiple skeins of the same color they are great. https://www.amazon.com/LOVIMAG-Premium-Rainbow-Embroidery-Bracelet/dp/B07TF4W6FW/ref=asc_df_B07TF4W6FW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693128361269&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11858417326784833619&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012365&hvtargid=pla-796803754265&psc=1&mcid=1c77e81d769037dab5a577d1434a7f0b |

Loops and threads from Michael's is also great because the pack they come in are multiple skeins of the same shade and color but I find they fray when I use them. If you use dmc and you don't mind the texture of it, I would recommend that and see if you can order it from Michael's internationally.

@itarosky @KnotsBySav @ElinBeck22 thank you all so much. It’s definitely a challenge since I don’t have access to Michael’s, Joann’s, Amazon.com or really just anything that isn’t in Europe but your advice is still helpful : )

Hi @bankageI don't know price-wise, but skein-wise, I can highly recommend Anchor thread. Same thickness, same count of six single strings, same length per skein (8meters). Also mercerised and washable at 95° C. I tried out some brands like Folia and Ursus, Creotime, Rayher, but always came back to Anchor and DMC, because the other brands got tons of frizz already out of the box. And after 2 cm of the bracelet was knotted, the strings tore apart. They will not withstand anything, especially no knotting with metallic thread. What brand you use might be secondary, but I would look out for a thread that has been mercerised and is washable at 95° C and able to be ironed. If this is all fullfilled, you got a pretty good quality yarn. 👍 😇 😘 😘 |
