So whenever I make alpha bracelet or keychains using an alpha letter I have a bad habit of making my base strings too short and I never realize it until it’s too late and I’m already like halfway into the patter is there anyway I can make them longer without having to waste so much string?

Yeah, the same way you'd add a new colour.

Here are some techniques how you can replace too short string. I suppose you can also use them for the basestrings in an alpha

You can also measure around your wrist, I usually do 1.5 wraps around, 2 to be safe if it’s a more complex pattern

I always add 4-6 extra inches just to be safe and you need to also remember to compensate for the length for the ties.
