Ellaborate Bracelet Patterns- Help?

I've been wanting to make some harder bracelet patterns because I always make alphas or very simple patterns. How do you know how many stings you need of each color or where to place the stings I the beginning before you start making them? I've been making bracelets for almost 4 years now and I haven't been able to figure it out. Can you help? ๐

For alpha patterns or for normal patterns? If you're getting into multi-coloured alpha bracelets you use a substitution method, to bring new colours in, keeping your base strings all one colour you won't see. If you're looking at normal patterns you look at the top of the pattern and just count the 'strings' at the top.
