Can you use a different size of base string than the leading?

I have a project that I want to incorporate knotting into, but I don't want to use a ton of base strings to cover the size it needs to be.Would it work if i used yarn for the base strings so I didn't have to use as many? I would tie the knots around the base strings with normal sized thread. |

Depends on how thick your yarn is. If your yarn is thin like DMC Petra 5 I think it would work but not for thick yarn : )

Your base strings don't have to be the same size as the leading strings. A little thicker base strings actually help you with avoiding that the image is elongated.
