You can always use:-sticks from outside -long skewers (can be bought cheap in big packs anyways) -toothpicks or safety pins for smaller stuff -a long piece of string instead (put the base strings all on one piece of string acting as a dowel) |

you could also use a broken hair tie, a popsicle stick, or a broken rubber band
