So, I just wanted to share a tip. I was concerned with wasting a ton of DMC floss on a wallhanging I am doing so I bought a roll of Aunt Lydia's size 3 crochet thread for $2.99 USD to use as the base strings on a dowel. They're a bit thicker than standard 6-strand floss so they wouldn't work for knotting but they are GREAT as base strings. Very pleasant feel to work with, flexible, and best of all they are just textured enough that they grip the DMC knots well (I find dmc to be really slippery and sometimes the knots will try to work themselves out by the time you come back around to that row if you're working on a really big wall hanging)I'm sure there are lots of other people who use this stuff as base strings, but figured it wouldn't hurt to share for those who hadn't thought of it! |

I use this thread for base string on almost all my alphas and I love it! For some reason, I also feel like it’s easier to knot on than normal embroidery floss and it makes my alphas a lot more neat/sturdy.

@Genki and @oceanknot what do you guys think about using thinner or thicker string for base strings? Or should it be of the same thickness? What's the result in the pattern?

@AnUser I would probably use thicker base strings, but either way should be fine. There isn’t much difference in the result of the pattern other than it being more sturdy and potentially neater (from my experience).

@AnUser Thinner base strings, in my experience, make it a bit easier to accidentally leave some gaps between knots and they just look a bit wonky. I definitely think base strings should be either the same thickness as your knotting strings or thicker.
